چکیده

Detection of 5 events by the Liquid Scintillation Detector (LSD) on February, 23, 1987 was interpreted in the literature as the detection of neutrinos from the first stage of the two-stage supernova collapse. We pose rigid constraints on the properties of the first stage of the collapse, taking into account neutrino flavour conversion due to the MSW-effect and general properties of supernova neutrino emission. The constraints depend on the unknown neutrino mass hierarchy and mixing angle θ13.

A comprehensive study of neutrino spin-flavour conversion in supernovae and the neutrino mass hierarchy

Resonant spin-flavour (RSF) conversions of supernova neutrinos, which is induced by the interaction between the nonzero neutrino magnetic moment and supernova magnetic fields, are studied for both normal and inverted mass hierarchy. As the case for the pure matter-induced neutrino oscillation (Mikheyev–Smirnov– Wolfenstein (MSW) effect), we find that the RSF transitions are strongly dependent o...

The MSW effect and Matter Effects in Neutrino Oscillations

The MSW (Mikheyev-Smirnov-Wolfenstein) effect is the adiabatic or partially adiabatic neutrino flavor conversion in medium with varying density. The main notions related to the effect, its dynamics and physical picture are reviewed. The large mixing MSW effect is realized inside the Sun providing the solution of the solar neutrino problem. The small mixing MSW effect driven by the 1-3 mixing ca...

Pulsar Velocities without Neutrino Mass

One of the most challenging problems in modern astrophysics is to find a consistent explanation for the high velocity of pulsars. Observations [1] show that these velocities range from zero up to 900 km/s with a mean value of 450 ± 50 km/s . An attractive possibility is that pulsar motion arises from an asymmetric neutrino emission during the supernova (SN) explosion. In fact, neutrinos carry m...

Neutrino oscillations in magnetized media and implications for the pulsar velocity puzzle

The effect of media on the propagation of neutrinos is nowadays a well established research subject . Among the several relevant implications of this subject for particle physics and astrophysics, perhaps the most remarkable application was the discovery of the possibility to have neutrino resonant oscillations in the matter (MSW) and the study of the possible role that this effect may play to ...

SN 1987 A and the Status of Oscillation Solutions to the Solar Neutrino Problem

We study neutrino oscillations and the level-crossing probability P LSZ in power-law potential profiles A(r) ∝ r n. We give local and global adia-baticity conditions valid for all mixing angles ϑ and discuss different representations for P LSZ. For the 1/r 3 profile typical of supernova envelopes we compare our analytical to numerical results and to earlier approximations used in the literature...
